Italy manages regional plastic waste crises and river pollution

Italy is facing localized environmental challenges regarding plastic waste management and river pollution. In Alghero, local official Raniero Selva announced that the critical phase of plastic waste management has passed. Waste is being redirected to Ecojanas plants, allowing the Santa Maria La Palma Ecocenter to return to full operation and the temporary storage at the Palazzo dei Congressi to be cleared.

In Sardinia, the Gallura region has experienced a plastic crisis due to recycling plant disruptions and high summer tourism. This has led to service suspensions in towns like Berchidda and Telti. To mitigate the issue, a new temporary storage area has been authorized at the Spiritu Santu plant in Olbia to hold up to 2,500 tons of plastic.

Separately, Senator Orfeo Mazzella is calling for national intervention regarding the Sarno River basin. Citing severe illegal dumping and groundwater pollution, Mazzella has submitted a parliamentary inquiry requesting the basin be reclassified as a Site of National Interest (SIN) to ensure stable state funding and centralized coordination for environmental remediation.
