Italy allocates €100 million to renew public transport fleets
The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has announced a plan to allocate €100 million by 2027 to renew and expand local public transport fleets. The funding, derived from 2023 ETS auction proceeds, is specifically targeted at metropolitan areas in regions facing European infringement procedures due to exceeding nitrogen dioxide and fine particulate matter limits.
The program supports the introduction of electric or hydrogen-powered buses for urban and extra-urban transport. It also allows for hybrid or methane-powered vehicles meeting Euro 6E standards, provided that an equivalent number of older Euro 5 or lower vehicles are decommissioned.
Beyond road transport, the initiative includes funding for lagoon mobility, supporting the adoption of electric boats and hybrid vessels to replace high-emission units. The transition aims to mitigate the environmental impact of daily urban commutes and improve air quality in densely populated areas.
