Italy approves Ambiente-bis decree for environmental remediation

The Italian government has approved the Ambiente-bis decree, a legislative package focused on environmental remediation, circular economy, and administrative simplifications. A major component of the decree is the allocation of 200 million euros for the remediation of the Terra dei Fuochi area, an environmental emergency zone in the provinces of Naples and Caserta. General Giuseppe Vadalà has been appointed as the Government Commissioner to oversee these cleanup efforts.

The decree also introduces simplifications for the use of CSS-combustible in industrial processes, including a 45-day silent-consent mechanism to accelerate transitions from traditional fuels.

Significant investments are also being directed toward water infrastructure across Italy through the PNRR. In Puglia, over 145 million euros are designated for water networks, including the province of Lecce. In Campania, 405 million euros are allocated for water works, with 205 million specifically for the Campolattaro reservoir in Sannio. In Tuscany, over 49 million euros will strengthen water systems to manage summer demand. Additionally, the Sicilian region has committed 40 million euros to the urban regeneration of Messina, focusing on rehabilitating former shanty towns through sustainable housing projects.
