Italy and Czech Republic seek suspension of EU ETS
Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babiš and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met in Prague to coordinate a joint position for the upcoming European Council meeting on October 15-16. The two leaders are advocating for the suspension of the EU Emissions Trading System (ETS) and a delay in the implementation of the ETS 2 system—which targets transport and heating sectors—until at least 2030.
This push comes amid concerns regarding European industrial competitiveness. Reports indicate that industrial electricity prices in the EU are on average three times higher than in the United States and China. Furthermore, the EU's share of global industrial production has declined from 22% in 2010 to an estimated 14% by 2025. In Poland, ETS costs are estimated to represent nearly 50% of the average industrial energy price.
Ten EU member states, including Italy, Poland, Austria, and several others, have previously requested that the European Commission reform the ETS to lower energy costs for both households and businesses.
