Italy and EU near agreement on gas price cap to lower energy bills

Italy and the European Commission are nearing a final agreement to implement a temporary gas price cap for thermoelectric power generation. The proposed cap is set at approximately 60 euros per megawatt-hour (MWh), a compromise between Italy’s initial request for 40 euros and the Commission’s 80 euro proposal. This measure is intended to last for eight months and aims to decouple international gas market fluctuations from domestic electricity prices.

In addition to the price cap, the agreement seeks to remove the cost of Emission Trading System (ETS) certificates from wholesale electricity prices. This intervention is estimated to provide up to 7 billion euros in national aid. For consumers, the measure could reduce electricity bills for those on variable rates by about 10 percent, saving an average family between 81 and 108 euros annually. Small and medium-sized enterprises may see savings ranging from 3,000 to 20,000 euros per year.

Separately, energy costs continue to pose significant challenges for Italian industry. In Mantova, Confindustria officials warned that energy expenses for local businesses could rise from 252 million euros to over 450 million euros by 2025, threatening regional competitiveness. Meanwhile, energy experts emphasize the need for a transition strategy that reduces gas dependency without creating a new reliance on foreign technologies.
