Italy and Japan pledge deeper security and prosperity partnership

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi met at Villa Pamphili in Rome, just hours before the G7 summit, to mark the 160th anniversary of diplomatic ties. They announced an upgrade to a “Special Strategic Partnership,” pledging joint work on robotics, space‑economy projects, clean‑energy initiatives and defence, including a joint sixth‑generation fighter programme with the United Kingdom.

Both leaders highlighted cooperation on emerging technologies, saying “C’è una straordinaria e particolare sintonia… Insieme futuro di sicurezza e prosperità.” They also agreed to deepen collaboration on semiconductors, artificial intelligence, biotechnology, and space‑debris mitigation, as well as joint efforts in Africa, the Arctic and next‑generation civil nuclear projects. The meeting touched on broader geopolitical issues, expressing support for Ukraine, satisfaction with the U.S.–Iran memorandum on Hormuz navigation, and commitment to a fair, lasting peace in the Russia‑Ukraine conflict.

The two premiers committed to a regular dialogue mechanism on economic security to reinforce supply‑chain resilience and to expand bilateral trade and investment across the identified sectors.
