Italy imposes border controls on Spanish travelers amid Ceuta migration crisis
Tensions between Italy and Spain have escalated following Italy's decision to reinstate temporary border controls, a move prompted by a significant migration influx in Ceuta, where approximately 72,000 people arrived in late July. The Italian government, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, maintains that these measures are necessary for national security and to prevent irregular migration and potential terrorism.
Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani has defended the actions, suggesting that the Spanish government should focus its security efforts on the Moroccan border rather than criticizing Rome's border policies. Tajani noted that Spanish intelligence has already issued warnings regarding the risk of new mass arrivals and Islamist terrorism in Ceuta.
In response, Spain has implemented its own border controls on travelers arriving from Italy. Since August 8, Spanish authorities have identified more than 4,600 travelers from Italy at various airports, including Madrid-Barajas and El Prat. The Spanish government has characterized Italy's measures as unjust and discriminatory, arguing they conflict with the spirit of the Schengen Agreement.
