Italy and Spain extend reciprocal border controls following Ceuta migration crisis
Italy and Spain have mutually extended temporary border controls on air and sea travelers following a major migration crisis in the Spanish enclave of Ceuta. The Italian government announced a 15-day extension of its measures, which are now set to remain in effect until September 15. Rome cited the need to combat irregular immigration and prevent potential jihadist infiltration as primary security concerns.
In response, Spain has also extended its own border checks on passengers arriving from Italy, with the new deadline set for September 21. The diplomatic friction stems from a mass influx of migrants from Morocco into Ceuta in late July, where an estimated 72,000 people attempted to cross the border. Spanish authorities estimate that between 5,000 and 8,000 migrants remain in the enclave.
The European Commission is currently evaluating whether Italy's measures are necessary and proportional under the Schengen Border Code. Meanwhile, a Spanish National Police report has alleged that Moroccan security forces actively directed the mass entry of migrants into Ceuta during the July crisis, a claim that has added further tension to the regional situation.
