Italy and Switzerland implement new identity document regulations

Italy and Switzerland are implementing updates to their national identity document regulations.

In Italy, electronic identity cards (CIE) issued to citizens aged 70 and older will now have unlimited validity. This measure, effective for cards issued after July 30, 2026, aims to simplify administrative processes for seniors and municipalities by eliminating mandatory renewals. While the physical document remains valid indefinitely, the digital authentication certificate used for online services will still expire every 10 years, requiring a new card for continued digital identity use.

Switzerland has adopted revisions to its identity document ordinance to introduce biometric identity cards. Set to take effect on November 1, 2026, the new cards will feature a microchip containing a facial image and two fingerprints to enhance security against abuse. Swiss citizens will be able to request these cards starting November 2, 2026, through cantonal services or Swiss representations abroad. The update also includes a terminology change, replacing “provisional passport” with “emergency passport” to align with international standards.
