Italy apologises to Thailand after students disrupt Bangkok metro

A video taken on the Bangkok metro showed a group of Italian students shouting, insulting a passenger and making obscene gestures. The footage spread quickly on Thai social media, prompting widespread criticism from Thai netizens and local media.

The Italian Embassy in Bangkok responded with an official statement expressing deep regret, condemning the students’ conduct and apologising to the Thai people. The embassy stressed that the behaviour was isolated and did not reflect Italian values. The student leaders and the travel operator also released apology videos, reiterating respect for Thailand and its citizens.

The incident highlighted the sensitivity of tourist behaviour abroad and prompted a brief diplomatic exchange, reaffirming the long‑standing friendly relations between Italy and Thailand.
