Italy approves €25 million fire service training school in Reggio Calabria

Italian interior‑ministerial officials visited the regional commands of the Vigili del Fuoco in Reggio Calabria, Lamezia Terme and Catanzaro. Sub‑secretary for the interior, Wanda Ferro, and State Sub‑Secretary Emanuele Prisco met fire service leaders, discussed staffing, equipment and infrastructure needs, and highlighted ongoing investments.

During the Reggio Calabria visit the government confirmed a new High‑Training School for the fire corps, with a planned budget of €25 million. The project involves the municipal mayor Francesco Cannizzaro, the Port Authority and the Demanio Agency. Union leader Antonino Maurizio Pipari had previously demanded clarity, stating, “Non possiamo permettere che Reggio Calabria perda un’occasione di questa portata.” Ferro replied that the school “nascerà” as part of a broader strengthening plan for the national fire corps.

The tour also addressed a €47.5 million regional fire‑station complex (the “Cittadella”) to be built in the regional capital, as well as new hires, upgraded specialist units and renewal of vehicles and rescue equipment.
