Italy approves law to reintroduce nuclear energy

The Italian Senate has approved a new law regarding nuclear energy, marking a significant shift in the country’s energy policy. This legislation aims to reintroduce nuclear power to Italy, reversing the decision made following a 1987 referendum prompted by the Chernobyl disaster.

The new legal framework authorizes the government to regulate various aspects of nuclear energy, including the construction and operation of power plants, hydrogen production using nuclear energy, spent fuel management, and safety protocols. Minister of Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto Fratin described the move as a step toward a sustainable future, stating that nuclear technology, combined with renewable sources, is essential for achieving climate neutrality by 2050.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni supported the law, noting that nuclear energy provides stability, low emissions, and increased energy security for families and businesses while reducing dependence on foreign energy sources. The decision is also seen as a response to the growing electricity demands driven by data centers and artificial intelligence. While the government views this as a way to stabilize energy prices and ensure security, the move has faced opposition from various political factions.
