Italy authorities warn of mushroom poisoning risks

Authorities in Italy are highlighting the risks of mushroom consumption following recent seizures and reports of poisoning. In Rome, local police seized over 70 kilograms of untraceable mushrooms and illegally sold pre-cooked foods at the Porta Portese market.

Guido Mannaioni, president of the Italian Society of Toxicology (Sitox), warns that seasonal mushroom picking increases the risk of intoxication. He emphasizes that even those with official permits should consult mycological experts if they are uncertain, as toxic species can easily be mistaken for edible ones. He noted that ignorance or overconfidence often leads to hospitalizations and fatalities.

In Lombardy, regional data from the 2024-2025 biennium reveals the scale of the issue. Over 2,200 inspections were conducted by mycological inspectorates, resulting in the confiscation of nearly 900 kilograms of toxic or non-edible mushrooms. During this period, 160 poisoning cases were recorded, including incidents involving children. Regional officials are now proposing new legislation to enhance prevention, information, and the role of specialized mycologists.
