Italy automotive market shifts toward SUVs and microcars
The Italian automotive market is undergoing significant structural shifts. In the diesel segment for August 2026, the Mercedes GLA emerged as the top seller, followed by the Audi Q3 and the Volkswagen Tiguan. While diesel remains a factor, the broader market is increasingly dominated by SUVs, which now account for approximately one in three new car sales. Popular models driving this trend include the Toyota RAV4, Dacia Duster, and MG ZS.
Urban mobility is also seeing a rise in microcars and electric quadricycles, such as the Citroën Ami and Fiat Topolino, which cater to younger drivers and short-distance commuters. However, a growing challenge in the market is the scarcity of new vehicles priced below 15,000 euros. While models like the Dacia Sandero and Fiat Panda remain in this budget-friendly bracket, the availability of affordable entry-level options is tightening.
