Italy awaits €80 million in tax credits for film industry

The Italian film industry is awaiting an additional €80 million in tax credits to support its production chain. Stakeholders emphasize the need to leverage momentum generated by new talent emerging from digital platforms.

Italy’s tax credit system, established under Law No. 220/2016 and managed by the Ministry of Culture’s Directorate General for Cinema and Audiovisual, serves as a key incentive for both domestic and international productions. The scheme allows companies to offset corporate income tax, VAT, and social security contributions.

For foreign productions, Italian executive production companies can receive a tax credit of 40% of eligible production costs, capped at €20 million per year. To qualify, projects must pass a Cultural Test evaluating creative and territorial engagement. The system offers operational flexibility, allowing credits to be used for monthly tax offsets or transferred to financial institutions for immediate working capital.
