Italy awards Medals of Honor to victims of Nazi deportation

In ceremonies marking the Day of Italian Internees in German concentration camps, Medals of Honor were awarded to recognize citizens deported and forced into labor during World War II.

In Livorno, the medal was posthumously awarded to Quirino Lattanzi, a former member of the 9th Carabinieri Regiment. Lattanzi was captured in Split in September 1943 and deported to the Stalag VI C prisoner-of-war camp in Germany after refusing to collaborate. He eventually returned to Italy in 1945. The honor was accepted by his nephew, Alessio Lattanzi.

In L'Aquila, a similar ceremony honored the memory of Arnaldo Santucci, a resident of Ovindoli. The medal was received by his family, including his son Luciano. Local officials emphasized the importance of historical memory and the necessity of passing these lessons of dignity and freedom to future generations.
