Italy awards Medals of Honor to WWII veterans

The Italian Republic has posthumously awarded Medaglia d’Onore (Medal of Honor) to two individuals for their conduct and sacrifices during World War II.

In Viterbo, the medal was awarded to the memory of Lieutenant Mario Ciaccio, an officer of the 42nd Infantry Regiment. Captured by German forces in Greece in September 1943, Ciaccio was part of the Italian Military Internees (IMI) who refused to collaborate with the Nazi regime or the Italian Social Republic, choosing instead imprisonment and forced labor.

In Sassari, the medal was awarded to the memory of Gavino Mura, a member of the Guardia di Finanza from Stintino. After being wounded during a coastal patrol in August 1943, Mura was deported to Nazi concentration camps in Austria, where he remained until his liberation in May 1945. The ceremony recognized his moral reparation for the suffering endured during his captivity.
