Italy banking desertification: 10 Piceno municipalities lack branches
Italy has experienced a significant contraction in its banking network, with the number of branches falling from 30,258 in 2015 to approximately 19,140 in 2025, representing a 36.7% decrease.
Data from the CNA Marche study indicates that this phenomenon of banking desertification heavily impacts smaller municipalities. In the Marche region, 71 out of 225 municipalities no longer have a bank branch, while another 34 locations are left with only an unstaffed ATM.
In the Piceno area, 10 out of 33 municipalities—including Castorano, Cossignano, and Montemonaco—lack any bank branch. This trend disproportionately affects residents in towns with fewer than 1,000 inhabitants, where nine out of ten are without local banking services, impacting small businesses, the elderly, and local social cohesion.
