Italy Boosts Breast Cancer Screening with Regional Partnerships and Free Screening Day

The regional health authority of Calabria met with Europa Donna Italia to address the low participation in organized mammography screening—22.1% of the 104,058 invited women in 2024, one of the lowest rates in Italy. The discussion produced a policy brief proposing structured dialogue between institutions and patient groups, enhanced communication campaigns, involvement of territorial doctors, and shared monitoring tools. Regional director Ernesto Esposito praised the collaboration, and Europa Donna Italia President Rosanna D’Antona highlighted the shared goal of expanding equitable access to screening.

Separately, the LILT Association of Rieti, together with the local health authority and the Fondazione Varrone, will hold a free screening day on 10 October 2026 for women aged 35–44, a group not covered by the Lazio regional program. Forty women will receive mammography or breast ultrasound at a mobile clinic near the Perseo shopping centre, with applications accepted online until 29 August 2026 and priority given to higher‑risk participants.
