Italy car tax amnesty launched in five regions

Five Italian regions—Campania, Lazio, Basilicata, Puglia, and Umbria—have joined the ‘Rottamazione-quinquies’ program, allowing vehicle owners to settle unpaid car and motorcycle taxes without penalties.

Under this measure, taxpayers can clear debts assigned to the Agenzia delle Entrate-Riscossione between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2023. While the original tax amount and notification costs must still be paid, all sanctions, interest, and surcharges will be waived.

Applications must be submitted online between October 16 and December 15, 2026. Taxpayers will be notified of the total amount due by February 28, 2027. Payment options include a single lump sum by March 31, 2027, or up to 54 bi-monthly installments of at least 100 euros each. Installments made after March 31, 2027, will incur a 3% annual interest rate.
