Saint Francis 800th anniversary celebrations to feature Italian President

Italy and the international community are preparing for extensive celebrations marking the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. The commemorations involve a wide range of religious, cultural, and artistic events across various Italian regions.

In Assisi, central events are scheduled for October 3 and 4, 2026. Italian President Sergio Mattarella is set to attend the Eucharistic celebration and will light the ‘Lampada Votiva dei Comuni d’Italia’ (Votive Lamp of the Italian Municipalities). The celebrations aim to foster themes of peace and fraternity, involving the Italian Episcopal Conference, regional presidents, and international ambassadors.

Regional initiatives are also underway, such as the ‘Francesco nelle Marche’ project in the Marche region, which utilizes historical sites and scientific conferences to highlight the Saint's influence. In Cesena, the program includes theatrical performances, musical events, and art exhibitions, including a showcase of medieval codes and contemporary sculpture. Other local communities are also hosting exhibitions and vigils to honor the legacy of the patron saint of Italy.
