Italy rolls out extensive road and rail closures for summer maintenance works
The Italian transport network is undergoing a series of summer maintenance projects that will temporarily restrict traffic on several roads and railway lines. ANAS will close the Vallo Scalo interchange on the SS18 VAR in Cilento from 22 June to 26 June and continue resurfacing works on the SS18 “Cilentana” and SS18 “Tirrena Inferiore” through July, with detours in place. Nighttime road closures are also scheduled around Turin on the SP 1 (Ala di Stura) and SP 146 (Cumiana) between 24 June and 27 June for sewer and pavement works. In the Varese area, the motorway authority will suspend traffic on sections of the A8, A9 and tangential routes during the night of 25‑26 June for barrier and signage maintenance, advising alternate exits. Railway services will be heavily affected: RFI will suspend trains on the Cremona‑Fidenza line between Castelvetro and Fidenza from 28 June to 26 July for track renewal, while the Vanzago‑Pogliano station is temporarily closed after a freight‑train collision on 23 June. Additional works include the reconstruction of the San Salvatore bridge on the SS 45 in Bobbio (25‑30 June), a short night‑time blockage of Via Emilia in Quindicci for canal repairs, and a temporary traffic light‑controlled one‑way system on Via Verdi in Bergamo until early July. Drivers are urged to follow posted diversions and plan journeys accordingly.
