Saint Francis of Assisi 800th anniversary celebrations held globally

Global and regional celebrations are underway to mark the 800th anniversary of the death of Saint Francis of Assisi. The Catholic Church has declared a Franciscan Jubilee year, with major events scheduled in Assisi, Italy, including a night pilgrimage on October 3 and a central celebration on October 4 expected to be attended by Italian President Sergio Mattarella.

In Italy, various cities are hosting cultural and religious programs. Events include lectures on the saint's influence on European culture, art exhibitions, and conferences discussing his legacy regarding ecology, peace, and social justice. Specific activities are planned in Bolzano, Cuneo, Grottammare, and San Severino Marche, featuring historical analysis and artistic tributes.

In Mexico, local communities are also commemorating the anniversary. Real de Catorce is set to inaugurate a monumental bust of Saint Francis, while Saltillo is preparing a month of religious and cultural festivities, including processions and concerts, to honor the patron saint and promote local tourism.
