Italy completes first prototype for European federated genomic data infrastructure

The Italian node of ELIXIR, coordinated by the National Research Council (CNR) in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, has completed and validated the first national prototype of FEGA. This federated infrastructure is designed for the secure management and sharing of human genomic data as part of the European Genomic Data Infrastructure project.

By passing verification from the FEGA European Strategic Committee, the prototype meets the technical and organizational requirements of EU regulations. This milestone allows for the transition to a production environment, integrating Italy into the European Health Data Space and the ‘1+ Million Genomes’ initiative.

The federated architecture ensures that genomic data remains stored within national infrastructures, respecting digital sovereignty and European data protection regulations. Simultaneously, it enables interoperability and searchability through shared standards, facilitating large-scale collaborative biomedical studies across the continent.
