Italy FEGA genomic data infrastructure development
Overview
Italy has validated its first national prototype of the Federated European Genome-Phenome Archive (FEGA), a key component of the European Genomic Data Infrastructure project. Developed through a collaboration between ELIXIR Italia, the Ministry of Health, and the National Research Council (CNR), the infrastructure is designed for the secure, interoperable, and controlled sharing of human genomic data.
The prototype passed verification by the FEGA European Strategic Committee, confirming its compliance with technical and organizational requirements. This milestone allows the Italian node to transition into a full production environment.
The federated model ensures that genomic data remains stored within national infrastructures to maintain data sovereignty and comply with European personal data protection regulations. By utilizing common standards, the system enables cross-border searchability and interoperability, supporting the European Health Data Space and the ‘1+ Million Genomes’ initiative to facilitate biomedical research and personalized healthcare.
