Italy considers 14 billion euro fund for energy transition

The Italian government is considering new financial measures to address the energy crisis and climate transition. Environment Minister Gilberto Pichetto Fratin has indicated that focusing on boiler incentives will be fundamental, specifically to support citizens transitioning from fossil fuel-powered boilers to electric heat pumps.

To fund these initiatives, the Meloni government intends to request a budget deviation from Parliament this autumn. This could allow for additional spending of up to 0.6% of GDP, amounting to approximately 14 billion euros, to be distributed across 2026, 2027, and 2028. These funds are intended for green transition investments rather than direct energy price cuts.

In response to these policy directions, the Movimento 5 Stelle (M5S) has criticized the administration. Party representatives Clima and Fontana argued that the Minister's claims regarding a lack of resources for climate adaptation highlight a political failure, noting that the National Plan for Climate Change Adaptation (PNACC) lacks the necessary implementation tools and funding to be effective.
