Italy considers subsidies for egg freezing to improve fertility access

A legislative proposal in Italy aims to increase access to egg freezing, known as social freezing, by providing public subsidies of up to 3,000 euros for women under 40. Introduced by deputy Emiliano Fossi, the bill suggests establishing a national fund of 30 million euros annually for the 2027-2029 period to reduce regional disparities in healthcare access.

Several Italian regions have already implemented varying levels of support. Puglia offers up to 3,000 euros for women aged 27 to 37 with specific income requirements, while Sicily and Tuscany have also seen legislative efforts to provide similar financial aid. Lombardy has moved toward supporting cryopreservation through vouchers and contributions.

The debate highlights the significant economic barriers associated with reproductive technology. While social freezing offers women more time to plan motherhood, the costs remain high. In the United States, a single cycle can cost between 10,000 and 20,000 dollars, a reality noted by U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez when discussing insurance coverage and the financial burden of fertility treatments.
