Italy cuts offshore wind funding for Taranto and Augusta ports
The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) has significantly reduced funding for offshore wind infrastructure, cutting the total budget from 78 million euros to approximately 38 million euros. The reductions specifically impact the ports of Taranto and Augusta, which were previously designated as national hubs for the offshore wind industry.
In Taranto, funding for infrastructure enhancement will drop from 28.5 million euros to 13.94 million euros. Augusta will see its allocation decrease from 49.8 million euros to 24.359 million euros. The Ministry attributed these cuts to linear reductions applied to its overall expenditure chapters.
Giuseppe Di Mare, the Mayor of Augusta, has called for a reassessment of the decision. He argued that Augusta's designation as a strategic hub for the country's energy system requires consistent financial support to avoid slowing down the development of the offshore wind supply chain.
