Offshore wind development in Italian ports
Overview
The Italian Ministry of Environment and Energy Security (MASE) reduced funding for offshore wind infrastructure, cutting the total budget from 78 million euros to approximately 38 million euros. These reductions specifically impacted the ports of Taranto and Augusta, which were designated as national hubs. In Taranto, infrastructure funding dropped from 28.5 million euros to 13.94 million euros, while Augusta’s allocation decreased from 49.8 million euros to 24.359 million euros.
In response to these developments, Taranto has moved to promote its maritime and energy sectors. The city submitted a candidacy for ‘Italian Capital of the Sea 2027’ centered on the blue economy and offshore wind energy. Additionally, Taranto is scheduled to host the third ‘Offshore Wind Revolution’ event in October to facilitate networking among international operators. The Puglia region remains a major center for the sector, with over 23 GW of capacity currently requesting grid connections through 31 offshore wind projects.
