Italy detains German Sea-Watch 5 vessel amid migrant rescue dispute

Italian authorities have detained the German rescue vessel Sea-Watch 5 for 45 days and imposed a €7,500 fine on the operating organization. The detention follows a rescue operation on August 13 in the Mediterranean, during which the vessel rescued six people and documented eight deaths.

The Italian Interior Ministry stated the vessel was detained for failing to notify the Libyan coastguard of the rescue operation. However, Sea-Watch spokesperson Giulia Messmer contested this, noting that the Italian maritime rescue coordination center never requested such notification and that the Libyan coastguard was present and in radio contact with the crew during the operation.

This incident reignites a long-standing diplomatic and legal dispute between Italy and Germany regarding the role of private NGO vessels in the Mediterranean. Critics in Germany, including members of the CDU/CSU and AfD, argue that these organizations encourage dangerous crossings and assist smuggling networks by bringing rescued individuals to European ports rather than returning them to Libya, a destination the United Nations does not consider safe.
