Italy electricity prices fluctuate amid heat-driven demand

Electricity prices in Italy have experienced significant fluctuations driven by seasonal demand and market volatility. In August, the Prezzo Unico Nazionale (PUN) reached 207.84 euros per megawatt-hour, marking its highest level since late 2022. This surge was largely attributed to extreme heat, which drove domestic cooling demand to record levels. Terna reported a peak demand of 57,985 megawatts in mid-July, while June saw the highest monthly demand in a decade.

Istat data indicated that in July, energy costs for regulated markets rose by 14.9% annually, while free market prices increased by 10.6%. By late September, the PUN saw a downward correction, settling at 178.60 euros per megawatt-hour. Despite this drop, market volatility remains high, with significant price disparities observed between geographic zones. Northern and Central-North regions maintained premiums over the national benchmark, while Sicily recorded the lowest regional prices at 148.88 euros per megawatt-hour.
