Italy enacts measures to secure ex-Ilva steelworks continuity
The Italian government has enacted emergency measures to ensure the operational continuity of the ex-Ilva steelworks in Taranto. These measures address concerns regarding industrial waste management and loan guarantees for strategic national plants.
In a related economic move, President Sergio Mattarella signed a decree extending a 17-cent per liter tax discount on diesel until September 5, 2026. This measure, estimated at 130 million euros, aims to stabilize fuel costs. To finance this without increasing public debt, the government will implement a temporary extraordinary tax on dividends from major energy companies with 2025 revenues exceeding 20 billion euros.
Regarding potential investors, the Czech holding company Ce Industries clarified that it has not submitted any formal proposal for the Taranto site, stating it is too early to formulate hypotheses for an operation.
