Italy energy costs could exceed 200 billion euros in 2026
Projections from the CNA suggest that spending on fuel, electricity, and gas for Italian families and businesses could exceed 200 billion euros in 2026. This scenario assumes average final prices increase by 20% compared to 2025, potentially bringing total expenditure to approximately 206 billion euros—an increase of over 33 billion euros from the 172.5 billion euros estimated for the previous year.
Under these conditions, Italian families could face an average annual spending increase of over 500 euros, while businesses could see an additional burden of more than 4,500 euros. If prices rise by 30%, total spending could reach 217 billion euros.
The report highlights that price fluctuations are currently outweighing consumption trends. For instance, while diesel volumes decreased by 4.3% in the first eight months of 2026 compared to the same period in 2025, spending on the fuel rose by 12.6%. Similarly, a 4.8% increase in gasoline volume corresponded to a 9.6% rise in spending.
