Italy energy costs impact household budgets and climate awareness

A survey conducted by the Piepoli Institute for Renael reveals significant economic strain on Italian households due to rising energy costs. Approximately 88% of Italians report that energy bills weigh heavily on their family budgets. This financial pressure has led 61% of respondents to forgo adequate heating or cooling in their homes at least once in the past year, a figure that rises to 71% in Southern Italy and the Islands.

Beyond economic concerns, the survey highlights a strong awareness of the climate crisis. About 87% of Italians view climate change as a problem affecting their daily lives, with 88% noting an increase in extreme weather events in their regions. Additionally, 64% of those surveyed reported experiencing heatwaves or extreme temperatures within the last twelve months.

In terms of domestic efficiency, data suggests that common misconceptions often hinder actual energy savings. For instance, using a dishwasher on a full load can consume 50% less water and 28% less energy than hand washing. Furthermore, leaving appliances on standby can account for up to 10% of total electricity expenses, and frequently turning heating systems on and off may increase consumption rather than reduce it.
