Italy espresso prices rise to average 1.29 euros

The average price of an espresso in Italy has risen to 1.29 euros, marking a 24% increase since 2021. According to research by the Center for Consumer Research and the consumer protection association ‘Assoautenti’, the era of the one-euro coffee is ending in many regions. In 11 provinces, the average price has reached or exceeded the 1.40 euro threshold.

Regional price disparities are significant. Bolzano records the highest average at 1.51 euros, followed by Pescara at 1.49 euros, where prices have surged by nearly 50% in five years. Conversely, southern cities like Messina and Catanzaro remain more affordable, with averages of 1.06 and 1.08 euros respectively.

Experts note that while raw material costs are a factor, the primary drivers of inflation are rising operational expenses for establishments, including electricity, rent, and staff wages. This economic pressure is driving a ‘home-caffeine revolution,’ with coffee bean sales increasing by 33% in a single year as Italians increasingly opt to grind and brew coffee at home rather than visiting bars.
