Italy expands breast cancer screening, adds funding for molecular tests

The Italian Ministry of Health announced a structural increase in prevention funding for the National Health Service, the first such boost since 1978. New resources from 2026 will be directed to breast cancer screening and the expansion of mammography to women aged 45‑49 and 70‑74.

A dedicated fund has also been approved for molecular ESR1 tests for patients with metastatic breast cancer. The ministry highlighted parallel work on updating the Essential Levels of Assistance, recognising obesity as a chronic disease and improving monitoring to reduce regional inequalities. These measures aim to transform prevention from a current expense into an investment, aligning Italy's approach with European standards and strengthening the national health fund.
