Italy expands quantum computing research and industry ties

Italy is expanding its international cooperation in quantum computing through new research partnerships and industrial missions. Three major Italian public research entities—the National Institute for Nuclear Physics (INFN), the National Research Council (CNR), and Enea—have signed two memoranda of understanding with prominent Canadian institutions.

One agreement with the University of Toronto’s Centre for Quantum Information and Quantum Control focuses on theoretical research, quantum simulations of complex systems, and the exchange of students and researchers. A second agreement with the University of Waterloo’s Institute for Quantum Computing and the Perimeter Institute targets applied research, specifically the development of quantum technologies and nanodevices.

Complementing these academic ties, Italy is also pursuing industrial growth in the sector. During an institutional mission to the United States, Alessio Butti, Undersecretary for Technological Innovation, met with global quantum computing operator IonQ. This engagement aims to bridge the gap between research and industry, attracting international capital and fostering domestic development. A two-year agreement between IonQ and Lutech has also been established to accelerate the adoption of quantum computing, security, and sensing technologies among Italian and European companies.
