Italy quantum computing and AI development

Italy is advancing its quantum computing and artificial intelligence capabilities through domestic industrial projects and international research partnerships.

Domestically, the Italian Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy approved the QUANTIA project, led by Tea Tek. This initiative aims to integrate quantum computing with AI by developing hardware and software to enhance quantum architecture scalability. The project seeks to establish an industrial quantum computing hub in Naples at the former Whirlpool site, involving several academic and private partners with approximately 5.99 million euros in eligible costs.

On the international stage, Italian research entities including INFN, CNR, and Enea have signed memoranda of understanding with Canadian institutions, such as the University of Toronto and the University of Waterloo, to focus on theoretical research and applied quantum technologies. Additionally, Italian officials have engaged with US-based operator IonQ to bridge the gap between research and industry, including a two-year agreement between IonQ and Lutech to accelerate the adoption of quantum computing and sensing technologies in Europe.
