Italy expands renewable biomethane production and grid integration
Italy is advancing its renewable energy infrastructure through new biomethane production and grid connection projects. In Borgo San Dalmazzo, the Acsr Spa biodigester has begun supplying biomethane to the network following a sales contract with Edison. The facility, which cost approximately 16 million euros and received 12.8 million euros in PNRR funding, is expected to produce 3.6 million cubic meters of biomethane annually, enough to meet the needs of roughly 4,000 families. The plant processes organic waste to produce both biomethane and high-quality compost.
In the Veneto region, the Cortepila biomethane plant in San Giorgio Bigarello has been connected to Italgas’s Digital Reverse Flow hub in Gazzo Veronese. This connection increases the hub’s annual reception capacity from 2 to 6 million cubic meters of biomethane, sufficient for approximately 6,500 families. The Cortepila plant utilizes agri-food waste, agricultural biomass, and livestock waste to produce up to 4 million cubic meters of biomethane per year. The Digital Reverse Flow technology allows local renewable gas to be compressed and transferred to national transport infrastructures when local demand is met.
