Italy biomethane infrastructure expansion
Overview
Italy is advancing its renewable energy infrastructure through the expansion of biomethane production and grid integration.
Initial developments included new connections in central and southern regions. In Caivano, an Edison plant was connected to the Italgas network to produce up to 4 million cubic meters of green gas annually from municipal solid waste. Additionally, in Cortona, a Centria facility began utilizing agricultural waste to produce 3.5 million Smc of renewable gas per year, supported by a medium-pressure network extension and digital remote management systems.
Subsequent projects focused on larger-scale integration and funding. In Borgo San Dalmazzo, the Acsr Spa biodigester, supported by 12.8 million euros in PNRR funding, began supplying the network with 3.6 million cubic meters of biomethane annually. In the Veneto region, the Cortepila plant was connected to the Italgas Digital Reverse Flow hub in Gazzo Veronese. This connection increased the hub’s annual reception capacity from 2 to 6 million cubic meters, utilizing technology that allows local renewable gas to be transferred to national transport infrastructures when local demand is met.
