Italy expands solar on parking structures amid investment boom

Italy’s photovoltaic sector continues rapid growth, with more than 2.2 million installations totalling about 44.9 GW by March 2026 and a projected addition of 1.439 GW in the first quarter of the year. A new European directive requires solar systems on newly built covered parking facilities by 31 December 2029, prompting designers and operators to adopt aesthetic solutions such as coloured modules, solar glass, roof tiles and active façades that blend energy generation with urban appearance.

The market is attracting corporate investors: the 2026 budget law preserves fiscal incentives, including a 180 % hyper‑amortisation scheme and a 43 % tax reduction over 11‑12 years. Expected pay‑back periods for medium‑size commercial plants are 4‑6 years, with annual savings of €15‑35 k per installation and revenue from self‑consumed and exported electricity. Funding options range from direct plant builds and crowdfunding to solar‑focused ETFs, while the commercial‑industrial segment is set to grow from 1.6 GW in 2025 to 2 GW in 2026.
