Italy expands supplementary pension enrollment
Supplementary pension systems in Italy are becoming increasingly vital as public pension reforms reduce the ratio between lifetime earnings and retirement benefits. These voluntary savings systems allow workers to accumulate additional resources through contributions from both employees and employers, which are invested in specialized funds.
Key incentives for these funds include tax deductibility of contributions up to certain annual limits and the fact that investment returns are only taxed upon withdrawal, facilitating faster capital growth through compound interest. Many employers, particularly in the public sector and large companies, provide significant contributions as an additional form of compensation.
Sergio Corbello, president of Assoprevidenza, noted that recent financial legislation has introduced fundamental changes, most notably the automatic enrollment of new employees. While this measure targets younger workers, there are calls to expand automatic enrollment to older age groups, similar to models used in the United Kingdom. This shift also influences investment strategies, such as the use of life cycle models that allow younger participants to utilize more aggressive investment profiles.
