Italy and Spain agree to end reciprocal border controls

Italy and Spain have reached an agreement to de-escalate their diplomatic standoff regarding border controls. Following a meeting between Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez at an EU summit in Brussels, both nations agreed to align the expiration of their respective border restrictions.

Italy has extended its temporary checks on travelers arriving from Spain for an additional seven days, ensuring the measures expire simultaneously with Spain's reciprocal restrictions on October 22. The dispute originated in August following a significant influx of approximately 90,000 irregular migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta.

To replace the current border controls, the Interior Ministers of both countries, Fernando Grande-Marlaska and Matteo Piantedosi, are scheduled to meet next week to negotiate alternative cooperation measures. Proposed alternatives include enhanced joint police operations, improved information exchange, and increased use of technology to manage security without disrupting the Schengen Area's principle of free movement.
