Italy extends August evening opening hours for Colosseum, Pantheon and Castello Sforzesco
From 1 August through 31 August, Italy’s Ministry of Culture and Ministry of Tourism, together with the municipality of Milan, are extending the daily opening hours of three major monuments. The Colosseum in Rome will be open on Fridays and Saturdays from 19:45 to 23:30, and the Pantheon will admit visitors daily from 19:00 to 23:00 (closed on Thursdays). In Milan, the Castello Sforzesco will stay open from 17:30 to 19:30 each day.
The experiment aims to disperse visitor flows, reduce heat‑related crowding, and align access with working‑day schedules. Ticket prices for the Roman sites remain unchanged (7 euros for the Colosseum), while the Castello Sforzesco offers a 50 % discount, with full‑price tickets reduced from €10 to €5.
Ministers Alessandro Giuli (Culture) and Gianmarco Mazzi (Tourism) said the extended hours will make the heritage sites more accessible, promote cultural tourism – now Italy’s leading travel motive – and support the strategic growth of the tourism industry.
