Italy extends validity of paper identity cards amid electronic ID rollout

The Italian government has postponed the deadline for paper identity cards, allowing them to remain valid beyond the planned 3 August cutoff until their natural expiration. The decision supports municipalities that are experiencing delays in issuing the new electronic identity card (CIE) due to high demand.

Communes may continue to use paper cards for interactions with public administration and service providers, and can issue provisional identity documents where electronic cards cannot be provided. In Anzio, the municipality has scheduled a series of open‑day sessions throughout July to accelerate CIE issuance for residents. Appointments can be booked online, with specific time slots on weekdays and Saturdays, and the program is designed to serve up to 492 requests.

The extension aims to ease the transition to the digital identity system while ensuring citizens retain valid identification for public services.
