Italy faces criticism of Green Deal and nuclear options amid energy crisis

Engineer Alberto Rovere, an elderly Italian electronics specialist, wrote to TerranostraNews blaming the Green Deal and current power policies for the energy crisis. He claims to have built a small‑scale charger based on Tesla’s 1891 concepts that can charge several batteries in series without drawing power from the main grid, arguing that such alternatives are ignored by media and policymakers.

Professor Arturo Lorenzoni, professor of Energy Economics at the University of Padua, responded with a letter describing the “illusion” of nuclear power. He notes that nuclear’s share of global electricity fell from about 18 % in the late 1990s to roughly 9 % in 2025 and is unlikely to rise above 10 % in the next two decades. New reactors are few, costly, and dominated by Russian, Chinese and Korean designs, while solar capacity added in 2025 was double the new nuclear output. He highlights rapid advances in solar, wind, storage and digital grid management making renewables increasingly competitive, and cautions that small‑modular reactors remain unproven for at least the next 5‑7 years.
