Italy faces cultural heritage staffing and security concerns

Concerns are mounting regarding the stability of personnel managing Italy's cultural heritage. Riccardo Tucci, a Member of Parliament for the Five Star Movement, has proposed an amendment to a Public Administration decree to protect 321 professionals hired under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR). These workers, including officials and security staff, face contract expirations on November 25. Tucci is calling for an immediate extension of contracts until December 31 and a permanent stabilization plan in the upcoming Budget Law to prevent the loss of expertise and potential closures of museums.

In Sicily, regional authorities have responded to warnings from the association Italia Nostra regarding security and staffing at museums and archaeological parks. While Italia Nostra described the situation as ‘alarming’ due to personnel shortages and inadequate surveillance, Sicilian Regional Assessor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato dismissed these claims as distorted. Scarpinato acknowledged that staffing levels have decreased over the years but noted that new recruitment processes have been initiated for the cultural heritage sector after a 25-year hiatus.
