Italian cultural heritage management and preservation

Italy has recently highlighted its cultural heritage through various exhibitions and open-air museum experiences. Events such as the European Heritage Days in Cesena have featured monument visits, including the Biblioteca Malatestiana and the restoration of the ‘Ritratto di giovane musico’. Additionally, the Museo Diffuso del Bosco near Rome has integrated contemporary art installations into the Castelli Romani Regional Park.

However, the management of these sites faces growing challenges regarding personnel and security. In the national legislature, Member of Parliament Riccardo Tucci has proposed protecting 321 professionals hired under the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR) whose contracts are set to expire in late November. Tucci has called for contract extensions and a permanent stabilization plan to prevent the loss of expertise and potential museum closures.

In Sicily, tensions have emerged between regional authorities and the association Italia Nostra. The association described staffing shortages and inadequate surveillance at museums and archaeological parks as ‘alarming’. While Sicilian Regional Assessor Francesco Paolo Scarpinato dismissed these claims as distorted, he did acknowledge that staffing levels have declined over time and noted that new recruitment processes have begun following a 25-year hiatus.
