Italy faces diverse waste management and recycling challenges
Various regions in Italy are facing significant waste management challenges, ranging from systemic market failures to localized illegal dumping and bureaucratic delays.
In the Marche region, waste management companies Cosmari and Marche Multiservizi have warned of a potential disruption to plastic recycling services. The national consortium Corepla has slowed the collection of plastic ecobales because recycled plastic is struggling to compete with the lower costs of virgin plastic on the market. This buildup risks exceeding the storage capacities of local facilities.
Localized issues of illegal dumping and abandoned waste are also being reported. In Arzachena, the Friends of the Environment Defense Committee is calling for more systematic controls and better multilingual communication to prevent waste abandonment. In Numana, hazardous waste from a New Year's fire has remained in a central square for nearly nine months due to bureaucratic uncertainty regarding responsibility for removal. Similarly, in the Forlì area near the A14 motorway, local committees are reporting frequent illegal dumping of domestic and hazardous waste in isolated peripheral areas.
