Italy faces electrical grid stability risks amid rising demand
Italy's electrical grid is facing increasing pressure due to rising temperatures and growing energy demands. Recent heatwaves have driven electricity demand to record levels, such as the 55.3 GW peak recorded by Terna on June 23, 2026, causing service interruptions in various areas.
The country faces several structural challenges in maintaining stability. Italy remains a leading importer of electricity in Europe, and the adequacy margin of the system has dropped significantly from 7 GW in 2018 to just 0.3 GW. This narrow margin increases the risk of blackouts during demand spikes or production drops.
Future demand is projected to rise significantly, potentially reaching up to 439 TWh by 2040, driven by economic growth, the electrification of consumption, and the energy needs of new consumers like data centers. Experts emphasize the need for faster growth in renewable energy, smarter climate control systems to optimize consumption, and strategic energy management to meet long-term decarbonization goals.
